Nicolás Maduro reiterates that Venezuela will choose this year the «governor of the Esequibo»

Nicolás Maduro, reiterated Monday that the country will choose this year the «governor» or «the governor of the Esequibo», the territory of about 160,000 square kilometers in dispute with Guyana.

«We are going to choose the governor, the governor of Esequibo now,» he said in her program transmitted by the state channel VTV, where she said that this territory, considered by Caracas as one of «the 24» regions of Venezuela, already has «its communal circuits and their communes », in reference to the» socialist «territories promoted by Chavismo.

In that sense, he set the goal of «having all organized Venezuela, at least, in 6,000 communes», which includes, he said, the so -called «state of the Guayana Esequiba», which, he said, «» already has its communal circuits , but it can’t be said ».

Last week, the National Electoral Council (CNE) – controlled by rectors related to Chavismo – announced that the regional planned for this year will be held, together with parliamentarians, on April 27, after which, Maduro said in January , the Esequibo will have «the first governor elected by the vote of the people.»

Subsequently, the Guyanés Foreign Ministry warned that Maduro’s statements «significantly» tensions «between the two countries.

For Guyana, that statement constitutes a violation of the Argyle agreement of December 14, 2023, signed in the presence of regional and international interlocutors, which compromises both nations to refrain from intensifying any conflict or disagreement that arises from the territorial controversy.

In a statement, Georgetown expressed his willingness to «participate in a constructive dialogue,» but clarified that «it cannot tolerate or accept unilateral actions that threaten their sovereignty and territorial integrity.»

Last December, the Maduro administration commemorated the first anniversary of a referendum in which citizens were consulted, through five closed questions, their position on whether the Caribbean country had to annex the Esequibo, which was approved, according to the electoral authorities.
