Trump raises tariffs to aluminum and steel imports

President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Monday to substantially raise the Steel and aluminum import tariffscanceling exemptions and tax -free fees for the main providers Canada, Mexico, Brazil and other countries, to a extent that it could boost the risk of a commercial war on several fronts.

Trump signed proclamations that raised the tariff rate on 25 % aluminum imports from the previous 10 % imposed in 2018 to help the sector in difficulties. Its action restores a 25 % tariff over millions of tons of steel imports and aluminum imports that had been entering the United States free of taxes under quota, exemptions and thousands of products of products.

The proclamations were extensions of the National Security tariffs of Trump section 232 of 2018 to protect steel and aluminum manufacturers. A White House official said the exemptions had eroded the effectiveness of these measures.

Trump will also impose a new North American standard that requires steel imports to be «molten and spilled» and aluminum are «molten and spilled» in the region to curb minimally processed Chinese steel imports in the United States.

The order also points to steel products that use imported steel.

Trump’s commercial advisor, Peter Navarro, said the measures would help American steel and aluminum producers and underpin the economic and national security of the United States.

«Steel and aluminum tariffs 2.0 will end foreign dumping, will boost national production and ensure our steel and aluminum industries as spine industries and pillar of the economic and national security of the United States,» he told journalists.

«It’s not just about commerce. It is about ensuring that the United States never has to depend on foreign nations for critical industries such as steel and aluminum.»

Trump first approached the measures on steel and aluminum on Sunday, and added that he would also announce another series of reciprocal tariffs later in the week, which caused reprisal warnings by commercial partners.
