Cuba suspends work classes and activities after 2 days of blackouts

After two days of blackouts that left more than half of Cuba in the dark, the authorities suspended work classes and activities throughout the country this Friday. The measure will run until Saturday.

The Ministry of Labor indicated in a statement that the provision has «the objective of contributing to the necessary saving of electricity consumption» and «mitigating the effects on the population.»

On Wednesday the electric company said that the deficit in the light supply would reach 56 % and on Thursday there was a situation with a similar percentage. The figure represents a record for the last two years.

There are currently at least ten thermoelectric plants (CTE) out of service and the country has lived off more than 20 hours a day in recent weeks.

In some areas of Havana, which according to social media users is the least affected, the light went and returned throughout Thursday or less every three hours. In the rest of the country the blackouts averaged 18 and 20 hours, according to residents.

Several breakdowns in the largest thermoelectric plants suffer breakdowns or are in maintenance. To this is added the lack of fuel to operate the plants distributed throughout the country.

At the end of 2024 the National Energy System collapsed three times, leaving the entire country in the dark.
