The Immigration and Customs Service will begin operating in Rikers, the largest prison in New York City, after the mayor met with the Tira Tom Homan border. In a statement Eric Adams, mayor of New York City said:

“Immigration and Customs Service agents will focus specifically on helping the Penitentiary Intelligence Office in their criminal investigations, particularly those focused on violent criminals and gangs. We also discuss ways to incorporate more New York police detectives into federal working groups. ”

Pro Immigrant Organizations accused Adams of being an accomplice of the Trump administration and making promises behind closed doors in exchange for their own interests. In an interview with the Fox chain, the mayor said it would be a crime if he were cooperating with the immigration and customs service in exchange for conditional forgiveness he recently received for the five federal charges for corruption against him. Activists and migrants protested against their policy change.

«They treat us as a criminal but not all are criminals, on the other hand I agree with the fact that those who commit crimes,» added Omar, a Venezuelan migrant.

At least five officials of the Department of Justice and the federal prosecutor of the case against Adams resigned following this pardon. Migrants have to find out about their rights, says this activist.

«We are working on training and education that they understand that they have rights, rights to shut up, not to say anything, right to call a lawyer,» said Fabián Arias, pastor and activist.

President Donald Trump said not to have instructed the Department of Justice to offer a conditional pardon to Eric Adams. Ángela González, Voice of America, New York.
