UN Security Council approves US resolution on Ukraine without mentioning Russian aggression

In a drastic change in transatlantic relations under the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States distanced himself on Monday of his European allies by refusing to blame Russia for his invasion to Ukraine during a vote of three UN resolutions that sought to end Three years of war.

In the General Assembly, the United States joined Russia to vote against a resolution presented by Ukraine with the support of Europe in which Moscow’s aggression is denounced and demands an immediate retreat from the Russian forces.

Subsequently, the United States refrained from voting on its own resolution after European missions, headed by France, succeeded in an amendment to make it clear that Russia was the aggressor. The vote was carried out while Trump receives the French president Emmanuel Macron in Washington.

It was an important stumble for the Trump government in the agency, whose resolutions are not legally binding but are considered a barometer of world opinion.

The United States later promoted a vote around its proposal in the UN Security Council, where resolutions are legally binding and where it has veto power alongside Russia, China, United Kingdom and France. That vote ended with 10 votes in favor, 0 against and five abstentions.

Competition resolutions are a reflection of tensions that have emerged between the United States and Ukraine after Trump suddenly began negotiations with Russia in an attempt to quickly resolve the conflict. They also expose the tension in the transatlantic alliance around Washington’s interactions with Moscow. European governments have expressed concern after being marginalized from the preliminary conversations of last week.

In increasingly frontal statements, Trump has called Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy a «dictator», falsely accused kyiv of starting the war and also warned that «better» than Zelenskyy act quickly to negotiate the end of the conflict or risk Not having a country to govern. Zelenskyy responded by saying that Trump lived in a «disinformation space» created by Russia.

The General Assembly voted first 93-18 with 65 abstentions in favor of the Ukrainian resolution. The result showed some decrease in support for Ukraine, after more than 140 nations in previous votes came to condemn Russia’s aggression and demand an immediate withdrawal.

The Assembly then brought to the United States proposal that recognizes «the tragic loss of lives throughout the conflict between Russia and Ukraine» and «implore a rapid end to the conflict and reiterates its call to a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia» , but never mentions Moscow’s aggression.

In a surprising movement, France proposed three amendments that were backed by other European countries, which add that the conflict was the result of a “large -scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation”. The amendments reaffirm the commitment of the Assembly to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and ask for a peace that respects the UN letter.
