Cuban boxing adds a new champion with victory of «El Bandolero» Téllez

The new Cuban boxing blood has hit the table in the 154 pounds. With temper and stuck, Yoenis «The bandit» Téllez made it clear that he is ready for great things after imposing himself by unanimous decision to Julian Williams and conquer the interim title of the World Boxing Association (AMB).

Since the bell rang at Barclays Center, Téllez showed that the night belonged to him. With patience and an educated soap, he marked the rhythm, measuring a Williams that tried to pull his veteran to stop the momentum of the young Cuban. But when the fight came into heat, the difference in energy and precision began to tip the balance.

It was in the sixth assault when the fight changed the owner. Téllez increased the pressure, connected with greater forcefulness and began to wear his rival with combinations that rose from intensity. Williams, who at the beginning bet on the backlash, was increasingly cornered, forced to endure a shower of blows that did not stop. He was able to find the knockout, but Téllez did not despair. He maintained his strategy, hitting with intelligence and without giving space to a Williams who, for that point, only tried to survive. In the end, the cards made it clear: 117-111, 118-110 and 119-109 for the Cuban, which is now dangerously approaching the top of the division.

And it is that with Terence Crawford aiming to climb at 168 pounds to face Saúl «Canelo» Álvarez, the interim title of the AMB could well become the absolute belt.

«It was a complete fight and I am very happy for how everything came out,» Téllez said after the fight. «I would like to dedicate this victory to my team and all my loved ones, as well as the fans who came to support me. J-rock (Williams) is a great champion, and I gave the best of me for 12 rounds against a quality opponent.»

With just 24 years, Téllez has taken a giant step in his career. It is no longer a promise, it is a reality. And Cuban boxing has a new figure that will give much to talk about.

In that same billboard, the Dominican Alberto Puello, who is trained by Cuban Ismael Salas, was airy in a very closed fight that ended in a divided decision against the Spanish Sandor Martín. With this triumph, the Dominican, under the guardianship of Salas, managed to retain his belt of the World Boxing Council (WBC) in the Super League division.
