At least 4 dead and 78 injured in Peru when the roof of a shopping center collapsed

At least four dead and 78 wounded left the ceiling in a shopping center in a city in northern Peru, authorities reported on Saturday, while rescuers still look for people who would be trapped.

The tragedy occurred on Friday night at the Real Plaza Shopping Center in the city of Trujillo, about 600 kilometers north of the capital Lima, at a time when dozens of visitors were in the place.

The heavy iron structure fell untimely to the diners that were in the center’s food court, the Interior Minister Juan Santiváñez, told the local RPP radio. It was possible to rescue 20 people immediately, he added.

«More than 200 police and firefighters carry out search work,» the Interior Ministry for the Social Network X said, next to a video that shows an agent rescuing one of the trapped.

The rescued have trauma of various types. In the night of the night there were still people trapped in the rubble, although the authorities have not specified how many.

Santiváñez indicated that together with the police, firefighters and rescue dogs were deployed to the site of the incident.

The La Libertad region, in the north of the country, also suffers a wave of violence due to the increase in extortion of various criminal gangs.
