Brutal clash between buses left at least 37 dead in Bolivia

A clash between two passenger buses left at least 37 dead and 30 wounded this Saturday on a road near the city of Uyuni, in the department of Potosí to the south of Boliviapolice informed the AFP.

The incident, the most serious so far from 2025, occurred on a double -meaning narrow road between Potosí and Oruro at dawn on Saturday.

«So far we have 37 deaths already confirmed, of which 35 people are older and two children,» said Colonel Wilson Flores to the AFP.

There are «approximately 30 injured,» Flores added.

The police performed a blood test to verify if the drivers were drunk.

One of the buses was heading to the city of Oruro, where this weekend is celebrated by the Oruro Carnival, one of the largest festivities in Latin America that attracts tens of thousands of people.

A year 1,400 people die in the Bolivia roads, mainly due to driver’s imprudence and mechanical failures, according to figures from the Ministry of Government.

This year, 64 people died in traffic accidents in the country until the end of February, police said in a report.

The Potosí department concentrates 10.6% of all traffic accidents with dead, according to the state Bolivian citizen security observatory. AFP
