Cuban reveals his favorite word in Catalan and unleashes laugh

The same word can have very different meanings depending on the country and is demonstrated when a Cuban reveals his favorite word in Catalan.

The comedian, Andreu Casanovahe asked Maite, a Cuban who has been living in Catalonia for seven years, if he had a favorite word in Catalan.

The woman, without hesitation, replied that her favorite was «Papallona,» which in Catalan means «butterfly.»

Although the election seemed innocent, the laugh of the Cubans present in the room made it clear that in his native country the word had another connotation. Andreu Casanova, intrigued, asked for an explanation, and Maite gave him a track with a popular phrase on the island:

«When a Cuban gets angry, he says: ‘It doesn’t get out of the Papallona.» The double meaning was evident and the public broke out in laughter.

The moment was recorded and shared in the humorist’s Tiktok account. In a few hours, the video where the Cuban reveals her favorite word in Catalan accumulated thousands of visualizations and comments.

While many users celebrated the occurrence, some took the opportunity to criticize the fact that Cubans adopt Spanish expressions after several years in the country.

The reactions

A user identified as «Madrid for the world» wrote: «What a disgust of Cuban, has been speaking like the Spaniards Jajajjja. They disgust. ”

But another user, Kubaleman, soon replied: “I spent three months in the East and returned to Havana singing … if I go to Spain I take the fast accent. The question is: how does she affect you?

Other Cubans commented that language is a mixture of influences and that there is nothing wrong with adopting local expressions without losing the essence of Cuban identity.

«The Cubans are unique wherever we are,» said @fabiolageilingonz.

«The best representation of Cuba,» @angie wrote.

«Now Totaila,» Yus-Ramirez-Realtor joked.

The richness of the Cuban language is undeniable, and this type of expressions reflect creativity and humor with which Cubans face life.

The episode not only generated laughs, but also opened a debate about the ease with which Cubans adopt new expressions when they live abroad.
