The Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom expressed their support on a plan backed by Arab countries for Arabic countries to Gaza’s reconstruction which would cost 53,000 million dollars and avoid moving the Palestinians of the enclave.
«The plan shows a realistic path for the reconstruction of Gaza and promises – if applied – a rapid and sustainable improvement of the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians living in Gaza,» said the ministers in a joint statement.
The plan, prepared by Egypt and adopted by the Arab leaders on Tuesday, has been rejected by Israel and by the president of the United States Donald Trump, who has presented his own vision to convert the Gaza Strip into a «Riviera de Oriente Medio».
The Egyptian proposal provides for the creation of an administrative committee of independent and professional Palestinian technocrats that would be entrusted with Gaza’s governance after the end of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamás. The Committee would be responsible for supervising humanitarian aid and managing the issues of the strip temporarily.
The statement issued by the four European countries on Saturday indicated that they were «committed to working with the Arab initiative» and that they appreciated the «important signal» that the Arab states had sent when developing it.
The statement also said that Hamas «should no longer govern Gaza or be a threat to Israel» and that the four countries «support the central role of the Palestinian authority and the application of its reform program.»
