Japan asks the US to exclude it from the 25% increase in steel and aluminum tariffs

The Japan government informed Wednesday that it has asked the United States to exclude it from 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, a change with respect to the tax -free fees that Tokyo had previously received.

Japan made the request through his embassy in Washington after the US president, Donald Trump, eliminated the exceptions and exemptions of his 2018 tariffs on steel imports, establishing them at a minimum of 25%, while tariffs on tariffs on Aluminum increased from 10% to 25%.

«Japan will firmly take the necessary measures as we thorough the next weeks before the measures enter into force.

The measures announced by Trump are part of their aggressive strategy to redefine global trade, under the belief that the increase in taxes on products manufactured abroad will strengthen national manufacturing.

A Tax Free Year

Japan received an annual tax free fee of up to 1.25 million tons of steel under the government of former president Joe Biden. Japan exported 1.18 million tons of steel to the United States in 2024, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Japanese steel exports to the United States totaled 302.7 billion yen (2,000 million dollars) in 2024, representing 1.4% of total exports to the United States. Aluminum exports were much lower, according to government data.
