Mayabe Cemetery, again denounced for tombs desecration

The Mayabe cemetery, in the province of Holguín, is being indicated, once again, as a place where the profanation of tombs occurs.

A family from Holguin is denouncing the disappearance of the body of Grisel Guillermina Ávila Expósito in this necropolis.
His daughter, Yoandra Ávila, discovered the fact when he tried to exhume his mother’s remains on March 5 and did not find them in the grave.

According to Yoandra to Martí News, the cemetery was in a deplorable state, with open tombs and scattered coffins.

When trying to access the grave, the local authorities informed him that he should wait 15 more days, because there were still remains of other corpses on his mother’s.

When the exhumation of the remains of the deceased lady at 68 years of a cerebral infarction was finally performed, his coffin was empty.

“My husband got into the grave and recorded along with the graveroo… nothing, nothing. My mom never appeared in the empty box, ”said Yoandra.

The family went to the administration of the cemetery in search of answers, but the manager argued that he had been in office for a short time and that he did not know what happened.

Ávila does not explain how the official «if she entered the 2025», does not know the exhumations that have been made and «the dead that have been taken out.»

In the midst of the search, the deceased’s daughter thought she recognized a hat similar to that her mother wore among the remains. However, the gradros assured that it was a coincidence. When his family tried to return to the cemetery to recover the hat as a possible proof, they found that everything had been cleaned and the object had disappeared.

The case is not isolated. In response to her complaint on social networks, the Internet user Susel Buitrago said that in the same Cemetery of Mayabe, a gravedigger sold bones to a man on a motorcycle. Although he tried to denounce the fact before a deputy and an official medium, his testimony was ridiculed.

«This is like a trip to hell. Every time I have to come, on the date of my grandfather’s birthday, then I spend days without being able to sleep,» a source told 14ymedio In February 2024, when the business with stolen bones was reported from that same field.

«The panorama is bleak: unarmed coffins, femards and warm that stand out from the niches and gravestones.

In that same year, Cibercuba denounced the existence of desecrated niches and bone remains exposed in Mayabe.

Similar situations have been denounced in other cemeteries of the country, such as San Carlos Borromeo de Matanzas and the Cemetery of Columbus in Havana, where relatives have found desecrated tombs.

The Holguin authorities have informed the family that they must wait a month to carry out the investigations. If the body of Grisel Guillermina Ávila does not appear at that time, they will have to file a complaint for grave desecration.

«If my mother does not appear, then the oldest, (a police officer), she told me that she already had to make the complaint for desecration of tombs, which is the crime,» said Yoandra.
