Panama seizes 890 kilos of drugs in a container destined for Spain

The Panama authorities reported on Monday of the confiscation of 890 drug packages found in a container from Ecuador and bound for Spain.

The Public Ministry (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) specified in a brief message on its social networks that the total of «890 packages with alleged illegal substance were seized today» by the Columbus Drug Prosecutor’s Office, the Caribbean province near the capital, during a «diligence of search and record to a container located on a ship.»

The authorities did not specify the type of drug seized or their weight, but sellers confiscated in Panama are mostly cocaine and the packages weigh a kilo each.

Panama is used as a drug bridge that is produced in South America and whose main destination is the US, the largest cocaine consumer in the world, and also Europe.

The Central American country closed 2024 with the seizure of more than 80 tons of illicit substances, according to official figures. In 2023, the seizures totaled 119.2 tons, the vast majority cocaine, according to data released by the Ministry of Public Security.
