Prosecutor Investiga Hotel in Bolívar due to illegal wildlife, including harpy eagle in danger of extinction

The attorney general, Tarek William Saab, announced the beginning of an investigation against a hotel complex in the Bolívar state, after viral videos that showed the exhibition of wild animals, including an arpy eagle, an endangered species, endangered.

The Public Ministry has appointed the 3rd Regional Prosecutor of the Bolívar State, specialized in environmental defense and environmental crime, to carry out the investigation. The objective is to determine the criminal responsibilities of the Azura Resort hotel, located in Guasipati, for alleged crimes of illegal hunting and illegal possession of protected wildlife.

The alarm was lit after the dissemination of a promotional video of the hotel, which shows a «mini zoological» with animals such as the Aguila Arpía, Guacamayas and Capuchin monkeys. The exhibition of the Arpia eagle, in particular, generated indignation due to its status as a protected species and in danger of extinction in Venezuela.

The investigation also contemplates the possible linkage of the eagle with a case of illegal marketing of three specimens of the species, which occurred between November and December 2024 on the Troncal 10 road.

The authorities indicate that the hotel could have incurred violations of various laws and decrees of environmental protection, including:

  • Decrees 1485 and 1486 of threatened species of wildlife in Venezuela.
  • Wildlife Protection Law (1970) and its LPFS Regulation (1999).
  • Biological diversity management law (2008).
  • Criminal Environment Law (2012), in its article 77.

The Public Ministry has assured that an exhaustive investigation will be carried out to clarify the facts and sanction those responsible for this alleged environmental crime.
