Secretary of Defense Hegesh travels to the Naval Base of Guantanamo

Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense of the United States, arrived on Tuesday at the Naval Bay of the Guantanamo Bay, in Cuba, to visit the facilities and receive information on the support operations to the deportations of illegal immigrants.

This is Hegesh’s first visit to the base since he assumed the position, the Pentagon reported Monday.

«The protection of the US sovereign territory is the mission of the Department of Defense,» he said in a message by social network X.

The arrival of the American official coincided with the arrival in Guantanamo of nine illegal immigrants from Fort Bliss, in Texas.

An officer confidentially said to the America of America that the nine are considered «illegal immigrants of high risk.» Another officer, also confidentially, indicated that a flight with more migrants tentatively will arrive in Guantanamo on Wednesday.

The Secretary of Defense reported that he visited the detention facilities at the Base in Guantanamo and that he spoke with agents of the US Immigration and Customs Control Service, as well as with Marine Infants that operate the Migration Operations Center.

This is, he said, «a critical temporal stop in the processing of these dangerous illegal immigrants for their eventual expulsion» from the US.

The Department of Defense pointed out in a statement that the Guantanamo Naval Base serves as a basis for vital operations for regional stability and maritime security and also facilitates the temporary detention of illegal foreigners that are waiting to return to their country of Origin or other appropriate destination.

From the executive order of President Donald Trump last month to send illegal immigrants to Guantanamo, the Pentagon has deployed hundreds of marines at the base to expand the facilities and support the detention operations of about 30,000. undocumented immigrants.

Trump has made the fight against irregular immigration a cornerstone of his second term and has promised massive deportations of undocumented and people with criminal records.

The US authorities started on February 4 to Guantanamo from an army base in western Texas. Last Thursday, 177 immigrants arrested in Guantanamo, all Venezuelans, were returned to their country.

Immigrant defense groups reject the strategy of the US government and have imposed demands to avoid immigrant expulsion flights.
