Shooting at hospital in Pennsylvania leaves a dead police and five injured

A shooting at the UPMC York Memorial Hospital, Pennsylvania, left a tragic balance of a deceased police officer and five other injured people, including two police officers, a doctor, a nurse and a janitor. The incident occurred on Saturday, when an armed man took hostages in the Hospital Intensive Care Unit and opened fire.

The attacker, identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, 49, also died in the confrontation with the forces of the order. According to the authorities, Ortiz had recently been in contact with the hospital ICU for a medical issue, which suggests that the incident could have been directed specifically against this unit.

The York County District Prosecutor, Tim Barker, reported at a press conference that Ortiz took an ICU employee hostage and pointed with his gun, which led the agents to respond with shots. Ortiz was killed in the place.

The UPMC Memorial hospital confirmed through its Facebook account that the incident has been controlled and that the hospital is now safe. Fortunately, no patient was injured during the shooting.

The authorities continue to investigate the reasons behind the attack and provide updates as more information is available.
