Born in Santiago de Cuba in 1917, Desiderio Alberto Arnaz and Acha III grew up in a accommodated family. His father was mayor of the city and his grandfather was linked to the foundation of Ron Bacardí.

However, the 1933 revolution changed its destiny. His family lost everything and was forced to emigrate to the USA.

In Miami, Arnaz had to reinvent himself. He went from cleaning Canarian cages to becoming a musical star. His talent with the guitar and his charisma opened doors in the New York music scene.

His great opportunity came when he joined the orchestra of Xavier Cugat, an icon of Latin music in the US.

But Desi was not destined to be just one more musician. He soon formed his own orchestra, the desi Arnaz Orchestra, and was key in the popularization of the Conga in North America.

His performances in New York nightclubs were a resounding success, which allowed him to enter the entertainment world.

In 1939, Broadway opened the doors with Too Many Girls, and shortly after he traveled to Hollywood for the film version. It was at this time that he met Lucille Ball, his great love and future companion in I Love Lucy.

The birth of I Love Lucy

In 1951, Arnaz and Ball achieved something unprecedented: they starred I love Lucy, one of the most iconic series of all time. But the real genius behind the show was desi.

From the format of three cameras to the production in 35 mm film, its innovations revolutionized television. It also established the concept of episodes repetitions, allowing the series to be reigned and generated income for years.

Lucille Ball insisted on having Desi as a cast partner, but the study was reluctant to the idea. It was a racist decision on his part: they said that Desi was too ethnic and that no one would accept it as her husband on the screen.

Arnaz demonstrated otherwise. I Love Lucy was a cultural phenomenon, consolidating it as an influential figure in Hollywood.

Desi Arnaz was not only a talented actor and musician, but also a visionary businessman. In 1950, together with Ball, DESILU PRODUCTIONS founded the company behind successes such as Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and The Untouchables.

Thanks to his ability to negotiate with television chains and his vision for production, Desilu became the largest independent producer of Hollywood in his time.

The company became a television giant, but success brought personal challenges. The pressure and their excesses in the drink and the women deteriorated their marriage to Lucille Ball, which led to their divorce in 1960.

Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball formed one of the most beloved couples by the spectators. They loved them deeply, but they were under huge pressure. However, Desi’s love for wine, women and music ended their marriage, with their career and, finally, with their life.

Despite their separation, Ball and Arnaz maintained a relationship of mutual respect until the end of their days.

DESI Arnaz’s legacy

Despite his turbulent personal life, Arnaz left an indelible mark on television. Its impact remains in force, and its influence is seen in each modern sitcom. In 1986, he died at 69 due to lung cancer, but his legacy lasts.

Shortly before he died, he received one last call from Lucille Ball. In that conversation, the love they always shared were remembered.

Even after his death, his work is still remembered and celebrated. In 2019, Google honored him with a doodle, recognizing its impact on the entertainment industry.
