The UN activates the planetary security protocol before the threat of asteroid YR4

The YR4 Asteroid Trajectory has generated an unprecedented alert in the international community, leading to the UN to activate for the first time in history the planetary security protocol. This protocol is activated after being detected that the asteroid represents a real threat to the Earth, with a possible impact date in 2032.

Asteroid YR4, with an estimated size of 90 meters, has mobilized the elite of world astronomy. On Tuesday, the International Group of Experts chaired by NASA met, and the European Space Agency (ESA) is expected to do the same this Wednesday. The concern lies in the destructive potential of the asteroid, comparable to that of an atomic bomb, which could cause significant damage if it impacts an inhabited area.

Given the magnitude of the threat, NASA and ESA planetary defense teams have been activated, including the International Asteroid Alert Network (IAWN) and the Space Missions Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG). These teams have predicted a high probability that the impact occurs on December 22, 2032, with greater probability that the asteroid falls into the ocean. However, areas that could be affected in case of land impact have been identified, including the east part of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa and South Asia.

The activation of the planetary security protocol and the mobilization of world scientific resources underline the seriousness of the threat represented by the YR4 asteroid. The international community remains on alert and works in coordination to evaluate and mitigate possible risks.
