A devastating fire occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Bayside, Queens, has claimed the lives of three members of the same family, including a senior citizen with Alzheimer’s and her two adult children. The incident, which unleashed around 2:40 am in a residence located on 20th Street between 33 and 34 avenues, mobilized dozens of firefighters and emergency services personnel of the New York Fire Department (FDNY).
Victims and testimonies
The authorities confirmed the death of three people in the place. Neighbors of the area identified the victims as a 90 -year -old mother suffered by Alzheimer’s, her son and a daughter with Down syndrome. “They are all dead. They were a mother and her two children, ”said Desmond Brennan, a family neighbor. According to Brennan, the two children of the woman were around 50.
The fire, which began in the basement of the house, was extinguished by firefighters after 4:00 am about 106 FDNY and Emergency Medical Services personnel were present at the scene.
Ongoing research
John Esposito, head of the FDNY, reported at a press conference that the bodies of two victims were found unconscious in a room on the first floor, while the third victim was found in the basement. Research is being carried out to determine the causes of the fire.
The Fire Commissioner, Robert Tucker, expressed his regret for what happened and assured that all possible measures are being taken to prevent future tragedies. “Fortunately, there were no problems with hydrants in this fire. The hydrants were clean. But we have three people who lost their lives in a fire. According to all reports, that is unacceptable to me. We will do everything possible in the New York Fire Department to ensure that fire deaths remain at a low level. Without a doubt, we are thinking about families affected by this, ”said Tucker.
This tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of fire prevention and the need for adequate security measures in homes. Citizens are recommended periodically their electrical systems, smoke detectors and evacuation plans.
