US will never forget atrocities against human rights

Florida Senator Rick Scott sent a message in honor of the late Cuban opponent Oswaldo Payá. «The United States will never forget oppression and atrocities against human rights committed by the illegitimate Cuban dictatorship,» he said.

Payá, born on February 29, 1952, would be 73 years old this 2025.

Scott recalled that Payá had dedicated «his life to oppose the ruthless regime of Castro and fight for freedom and democracy in Cuba.»

«We will not give up until Raúl Castro and Miguel Díaz-Canel finally pay accounts for their crimes,» added the senator in a message in which he pointed out that «both President Donald Trump and the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio,» have already made incredible advances by undoing the weak policies of appeasement of (Joe) Biden and reinstalling Cuba as a state of terrorism. «

Payá and his dream of freedom for Cuba

Cuban opposition leader Oswaldo Payá and his colleague, activist Harold Cepero, died in July 2012, in a suspicious vehicle accident in the East of Cuba. His relatives argue that the incident was caused by the Cuban authorities. The car was led by the Spanish citizen Ángel Carromero, who was sanctioned four years in jail for involuntary homicide, and released shortly after.

Payá, winner of the Andrei Sajarov Award for the Human Rights of the European Parliament in 2002, was the leader of the Varela project, in which a group of independent civil society activists collected more than 14,000 signatures to request a referendum and achieve fundamental changes in the Constitution that returned democracy and freedom to the Cuban people.

Her daughter, also the opposition leader Rosa María Payá, today published an emotional video on her social networks in which she remembers her father’s legacy.

«His dream of freedom for Cuba and the Americas is today a generalized and urgent demand. His legacy guides us in this fight. Thanks to all the friends who wanted to be part of this tribute to Oswaldo on the day of his birth,» he wrote.

«At some point between today and tomorrow you would fulfill 73 and we would all celebrate with you. Today we celebrate without you, but we celebrate your life, because hate could not kill your love in our hearts or your liberation legacy for all Cubans,» he said in a previous publication.
