USA Senate confirms Pam Bondi at the head of the Department of Justice

The Senate confirmed on Tuesday to PAM Bondi as Secretary of Justice of the United States.

The vote was practically held within partisan lines, and only the Democrat John Fetterman joined the Republicans to approve confirmation with 54 votes in favor and 46 against.

Bondi is planned – a general exfiscal of Florida and corporate council – to be at the forefront of a radical restructuring in an department that has been the object of Trump’s anger for the criminal cases it imputed. He will take office at a time when one of the agencies he will supervise, the FBI, is plunged into a tumult due to the scrutiny to the agents involved in investigations related to the president, who has made clear his desire to take revenge on who consider their adversaries.

Republicans have praised Bondi as an extremely qualified leader who, according to them, will generate a very necessary change in an department that they believe unfairly chased Trump through investigations that resulted in two formal accusations.

«Pam Bondi has pledged to take his main mission to the department again: processing the crime and protecting Americans from threats to their safety and their freedoms,» said the majority leader in the Senate, Republican John Thune.

But Bondi has faced an intense scrutiny due to his close relationship with the president, who during his mandate dismissed an FBI director who refused to swear him loyalty and forced the departure of another Secretary of Justice who challenged himself from the agency’s investigation on possible links between Russia and its 2016 presidential campaign.

Although Bondi has tried to guarantee the Democrats that politics would not play any role in their decisions, during their confirmation hearing last month he also refused to rule out possible investigations against Trump’s adversaries.

In addition, he has repeated Trump’s claims that the accusations against him were a political persecution, stating that the Department of Justice «has been used as a weapon for years and years and years, and that has to stop.»
