Shoigu’s visit to Beijing took place on the same day that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, received the Ukrainian leader, Volodimir Zelenski in the Oval Office, with whom he starred in a tense disagreement that ended the second abandoning the White House before planned.

Xi, who recalled that he has spoken twice so far this year with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin -last this week -said that in 2025 Beijing and Moscow will undertake “a series of important agendas” and also called to maintain a “communication close to all levels,” according to Chinese state media.

He also asked to maximize the role of the countries of the BRICS emerging economies group and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, two blocks that are part of both China and Russia.

The Chinese media do not indicate whether XI mentioned the peace process in Ukraine, but they say that Shoigu said that Russia «greatly appreciates China’s continuous efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the crisis» Ukrainian.

According to the official Xinhua agency, the Russian envoy said that the alliance between China and Russia «plays a significant role in the world and constitutes a model for relations between powers.»

Shoigu also asserted that the relationship between the two countries «is not objective to third parties.»

Before seeing the Chinese leader, Shoigu met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who said that his country will continue to “play a constructive role in promoting peace conversations and the search for a political solution” to the Ukraine War.

The Russian envoy informed the Chinese chancellor about contacts between Russia and the United States and reiterated that his country «is committed to eliminating the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and seeking a permanent, fair and sustainable plan for peace.»

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, China has maintained an ambiguous position on the conflict, from which it has requested respect for «the territorial integrity of all countries», including Ukraine, and attention for the «legitimate concerns of all» the states, in reference to Russia.

Thus, Beijing has opposed «unilateral» sanctions against Moscow and requested a political solution. However, the West has accused China of supporting the Russian military campaign, something that has always denied, and supplying Putin of key components he needs to produce armament.
