Trump administration and human rights group will go to court for migrants in Guantanamo

American government lawyers will face representatives of civil and immigrant rights groups for the use of an American naval base in Cuba to retain migrants with deportation orders.

The arguments of the two demands on operations at the Naval Station of the Guantanamo Bay, presented against the Department of National Security (DHS in English) and Secretary Kristi Noem, will be presented before a United States District Court in Washington on Friday.

The demands claim that the US government has exceeded limits when denying migrants sent to Guantanamo Bay access to legal representation and when trying to send them to the base facilities without due authorization, thus violating the constitution of the US.

DHS officials did not immediately respond to a request for comments on the next hearing, but have repeatedly denied the accusations and criticized the groups that present the demands.

«The American Union of Civil Liberties (ACLU) seems much more interested in promoting the opening of borders and disturbing public security missions than in protecting the civil liberties of Americans,» said a DHS spokesman to the DHS to the Voice of America In a statement earlier this month.

«They should consider changing their name,» added the spokesman under anonymity, qualifying the legal challenges of «unfounded.»

President Donald Trump first raised the idea of ​​using the American naval base in Cuba as part of his administration’s plans to make mass deportations shortly after assuming office in January.

Noem, from the National Security Department, said that the base, which has a security prison to house captured terrorists, would be used to house «the worst of the worst.»

Trump and other US officials also suggested that the base could be used to house up to 30,000 migrants while waiting for their deportation. However, those plans never materialized at all.

The United States began sending at the beginning of February to the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center to whom the authorities described as «illegal immigrants of high threat», followed by other non -violent migrants that were housed in other facilities.

Sometimes, the facilities housed about 200 detainees, many of which were deported to Honduras, Venezuela or other countries.

However, despite the efforts to prepare the facilities for more migrants, the capacity has been limited.

According to an American defense officer, who spoke with the Voice of America Under anonymity, prison, in its current configuration, can only house 130 detainees, while the center of migratory operations of the base and a temporary camp of tents can house, at most, 550 people.

As the voice of America initially reported, the officials of the Department of National Security (DHS) decided to send to the remaining 40 migrants of the prison and other facilities of the Guantanamo Bay last Tuesday, transferring them by plane to the state of Louisiana, in the south of the United States.
