The Cubamax company confirmed to Martí News this Friday the temporary suspension of remittance shipments to Cuba.
An employee of the headquarters of the company, located in Hialeah, explained that Cubamax «is in a restructuring process related to the companies that distribute the money in Cuba.»
Cubamax was one of the agencies in charge of managing remittances to the island through Orbit SA, a state entity controlled by the military conglomerate Business Administration Group (GAESA), chaired by Brigade General Ania Guillermina Lastres Lastres Morera.
In January of this year, the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, approved the reactivation of the restricted list of Cuba, a measure that prohibits transactions with entities controlled by, or acting on behalf of the military, intelligence or security services of the Cuban regime. Orbit SA was included in this relationship in February.
That same month, the Western Union Financial Services Company suspended money transfers to Cuba after the State Department of restoring sanctions to companies led by Cuban military.
Cubamax’s employee, who preferred not to reveal her identity, told Martí News that «according to her understanding, this restructuring is not related to any legislation approved in Washington.»
In addition to the restricted list of Cuba, the Donald Trump government implemented a series of measures that directly affected the Business Administration Group SA (GAESA) and its associated entities, as Financial Cimex SA (Fincimex) and Kave Coffee SA, as part of its economic pressure policy towards the Cuban regime. These actions were backed by various US laws and regulations.
The measures include the inclusion of GAESA and its associated entities in the list of specially designated nationals (SDN) that implies that, through the Department of Treasury, all the properties and interests of these entities in the US are blocked and cannot carry out financial transactions with US people or entities.
Restrictions on the restriction of remittances were also implemented, limitations in the tourism sector that includes restrictions in the operation of cruises and private flights towards the island and the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton law allowed US citizens to demand in US courts in foreign companies that traffic with properties that were confiscated by the Cuban regime.
