A tornado in Pinar del Río surprises the residents of Chamizo

This Wednesday, the province lived an unusual day when a tornado was sighted in Pinar del Río, specifically in the vicinity of Chamizo, within the Briones Montoto.

The phenomenon remained active for about 15 minutes and, although it did not cause material or humans, it made it clear that the weather in western Cuba does not give truce.

San Juan y Martínez: another town under climate attack

Only hours after the tornado in Chamizo, at 5:22 p.m., the municipality of San Juan and Martínez was hit by a severe local storm.

Hanizi fell, the winds reached between 70 and 80 km/hyred heavy rains with frequent electrical discharges.

The Yuniesky Pendas weather observer reported that the largest registered streak was 52 km/h, and the accumulated rain was 11.9 mm.

This climatic situation particularly affected two locations with severe phenomena. In the municipality of San Juan and Martínez there was a severe local storm at 5:22 p.m., characterized by the fall of strong hail, wind gusts between 70 and 80 km/h, heavy rains and numerous electric shocks.

These events occurred in an interval of just two hours, demonstrating the speed with which the weather can change when the conditions are extreme.

What is causing this instability?

The main cause behind the tornado in Pinar del Río and the storms that accompanied it is a trough in the middle and high levels of the troposphere.

This weather system was combined with high humidity, the strong daytime warming and local factors that favored the formation of extreme phenomena.

According to meteorologists Raydel Ruisánchez and Humberto Raúl Acosta González, these conditions remain active and could continue to cause storms in the next few days.

The impact beyond Pinar del Río

On the previous day, on Tuesday, a severe storm hit Unión de Reyes, in Matanzas, reaching winds of more than 90 km/h, producing heavy rains and hail that seriously damaged a pharmacy and the Judo gym of the Inder, destroying their ceilings. »

Even in Santa Clara, in the Callejón de los Patos community, the storms left their mark, although without human victims.
