Activist will run marathon from Madrid for Cuban political prisoners

The journalist, activist and daughter of a Cuban political expriceseer, Eugenia Gutiérrez, will dedicate her participation in the Zurich Rock ‘N’ Roll Running Series Madrid marathon to the more than a thousand people imprisoned in Cuba for political and conscientious reasons, with the purpose of making visible their situation before the national and international community.

Gutierrez, a member of the Democratic Transition Council in Cuba, launched on March 26 the #Nolosabandonos campaign, to help Cuban political prisoners and their families and raise awareness about the harsh conditions of seclusion they face on the island.

In statements to the magazine Tense wingsthe activist said she will promote this initiative through an activity that passionate about it: «run marathons.» According to the feminist portal, the campaign will be active until May 4, 2025, and has the support of the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba, José Daniel Ferrer.

In an article on the subject, Tense Alas explains that the choice of this marathon in the Spanish capital by Gutiérrez is not accidental to make visible his campaign. The Zurich Rock ‘N’ Roll Running Series Madrid brings together about 45 thousand participants every year, and about 10,000 foreigners from more than 110 countries among them.

The Cuban activist, who runs marathons since 2027, will share information about Cuban political prisoners in the weeks before and after the sporting event. With the #Nolosabandonos campaign we pay tribute «to all defenders of rights and freedoms of the Cuban people who are today unfairly imprisoned.»

Gutiérrez said that the most exciting moment to run a marathon is when he enters the goal with the Cuban flag, which gives him strength to complete the route.

According to the most recent report of the organization Prisoners Defendersbased in Madrid, in Cuba there are around 1,150 political and conscientious prisoners, who suffer judicial convictions and provisions of limitation of freedom by prosecutors without judicial supervision, due process or effective defense, in flagrant violation of international law.
