The Chinese government on Tuesday asked that Washington «stopped interfering with the internal affairs of Venezuela», referring to the announcement by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, of the imposition of 25 % tariffs to the countries that buy oil from the Caribbean country.
The spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Guo Jiakun declared today at a press conference that the North American country «has long abused the illegal unilateral sanctions» and a «long -range jurisdiction», while asking Washington to «remove its sanctions» against Caracas.
Guo said that his country «firmly opposes the brutal interference in the affairs of other countries» and urged the American nation to «do more in favor of the peaceful and stable development of Venezuela.»
«There are no winners in commercial wars or tariff wars, and the imposition of tariffs will only cause greater losses for US companies and consumers,» added the spokesman.
Guo did not detail whether China would paralyze its imports from Venezuelan crude if Washington finally applied to the Asian country the announced taxes.
The tariffs announced by Trump will take effect on April 2 and the Republican leader left in the hands of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the imposition of the encumbrances to the countries that are considered pertinent.
In a first message in the social Truth network, Trump had pointed out that «any country that buys oil and/or gas to Venezuela must pay a 25 % tariff to the United States on any commercial transaction» that performs with the United States.
This «secondary tariff» replies, he said on that platform, that Venezuela has sent to the United States «tens of thousands of high -level criminals and other criminals» in a «intentionally and fraudulent» way.
According to Chinese customs data, Venezuela is the twelfth exporter of oil to the Asian giant, with 1.4 million metric tons sold to China in 2024.
Trump had already decided to duplicate the additional tariffs of China at 20 % shortly after returning to the White House, justifying his decision by stating that, in his opinion, Beijing does not do enough to avoid the entry of fentanyl in the United States.
It is unknown for the moment if the possible new levies to China related to Venezuelan oil would be added to the duplication already mentioned.
In his first presidency (2017-2021), Trump maintained a tense relationship with Beijing by imposing several rounds of tariffs worth 370,000 million dollars annually, to which China responded with taxes to US exports.
