Ferrer’s wife details how the police assault was at the headquarters of UNPACU (video)

The wife of the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba, the political prisoner José Daniel Ferrer, described in a video, shortly after being released, how the authorities assaulted at the early hours of Tuesday the headquarters of that organization and arrested all those who remained in place, including their young son, only 4 years old.

«They entered here about six in the morning and violently took my husband,» said the activist and added that they have no information about her whereabouts. «It’s missing, we don’t know where it is.»

In the case of her and the child, he explained that the agents who carried out the search of the house and headquarters of UNPACU told him that he could not remain in the place and led it to a house in the Versalles cast that, they indicated, it was «of protection for the children.»

«According to them they were not threats, but warning that the child had to protect him. That is what we do most, both his dad and me: care, protect, safeguard our son; teach him the best values. That is what we have done, because what we do here is to feed people (…), provide health, provide emotional support,» Ortega said.

They are tasks that the Communist Party and the Cuban State should carry out, «which is not a government, it is a dictatorship, a dictatorial system,» he said.

After its release last January, as part of the negotiations between the Cuban regime and the Vatican who allegedly understood the release of 553 prisoners, the leader of UNPACU, together with his wife, undertook the task of feeding hundreds of people and providing them with primary medical attention at the headquarters of the organization, in the distribution Altamira de Santiago de Cuba. The project suffered from the beginning the constant siege of the police forces, including direct threats and arrests of collaborators and people who went to the place in search of help.

«What we should do public health here in the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), in a simple house, thanks to collaborators here who help us, and thanks to exiled Cubans who support us,» he said.

The activist made a count of the belongings confiscated by the authorities, an act that described as theft.

«All the foods of the house and all of the social work were stolen. What left, practically, was water and some leftovers that were in the food last night. All the medications were stolen. The fridge, which had water, some malts of the child, soft drinks, all that, they took it,» Ortega said.

They also confiscated money, rechargeable lamps, an electric plant and a converter that the family used during the long blackout hours, in addition to cleaning products, including soaps and detergents.

On Tuesday, in parallel to the arrests, the Supreme Court of Cuba announced the Revocation of probation to Ferrer and the political prisoner Félix Navarro, in the province of Matanzas.

The independent legal consulting Cubalex denounced that «although the authorities try to justify the arrests under alleged breaches of judicial formalities, the official narrative itself reveals the true objective: punish the peaceful activism of both opposition leaders.»

The organization recalled that since its release, both Ferrer and Navarro have been victims of constant harassment, systematic arbitrary arrests and permanent pressures under the threat of being returned to prison.

«From Cubalex we denounce the arbitrary use of the law to silence critical voices, the lack of judicial guarantees and the systematic repression against those who exercise their fundamental rights. We make an urgent call to make visible these abuses and demand full respect for human rights in Cuba.»
