Government of Cuba seizes thousands of false dollars on the island

The Cuba government dismantled an operation that sought to enter thousands of false and narcotic dollars derived from marijuana.

The operation took place this Sunday, March 23 in a joint action of the customs authorities and the forces of the order. According to official media, the money was going to be admitted from the United States.

Although no more data were offered in this regard, the Cubadebate medium assured that it was an operation carried out by customs officers in drug trafficking prevention.

Money, about 30 thousand dollars, would apparently be used for «didactic» purposes, as film recordings. However, the presence of a substance consisting of sublingual tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound of cannabis was also detected.

Fight drug trafficking

For his part, William Pérez González, first vice head of the General Customs of the Republic of Cuba, He explained that the confiscation is part of the program «within the framework of the intensified exercise of drug confrontation.»

This work is carried out together between the Ministries of Interior, Health and Education, Customs and the Cuban Prosecutor’s Office, the Popular Supreme Court together with local and community organizations.

Although the point where the operation was carried out, airports such as the international José Martí, in Havana, and Frank País, Holguín, are two of the ports where more crimes of this type are detected.

Recently, five people were prosecuted by the Court of the province of Sancti Spíritus. These individuals face sentences between seven and ten years in jail due to traffic and possession of illicit drugs or substances of similar effects. Regarding the prevention of this type of crimes, the Cuban government has launched a new offensive to stop the smuggling of narcotics on the island.

The official media of the Communist Party of Cuba, Diario Granma, said that the «third exercise of prevention and confrontation of drugs» had been carried out in the capital. In this way, we work on the «reinforcement of the actions in the state border steps and the control points on the roads, prophylactic preventive interventions in 57 teaching centers and exemplary judgments,» said the newspaper.

Last year, more than a thousand kilograms of drugs between cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and cannabinoids were seized in the largest. Likewise, 1,157 people linked to drug trafficking were sanctioned.
