Pope Francis has spent «calm» his first night at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he receives treatment for a respiratory road infection, after being admitted this Friday because of bronchitis.
The Pontiff has spent a «quiet» night and has even lowered the slight fever he suffered, according to Vatican sources cited by Public Television Rai and the Ansa agency, while the Holy See is expected to officially report its state in the next few hours.
According to the same sources, which are «reassuring», the therapy to which it is being subjected is improving its situation.
Francisco, 88, suffers from bronchitis that in recent days had made it impossible for him to read some speeches and finally forced him to hospitalize him to submit to diagnostic exams and continue the treatment.
«The Holy Father, after the persistence of bronchitis of these days, has undergone specialized analyzes and has begun hospital pharmacological therapy,» the Vatican said last night.
The analyzes «demonstrate an infection in the respiratory tract,» he explained in a statement, in which he added that his clinical conditions were «discrete» (moderate) and that he presented «a mild febrile alteration.»
After the publication of that first part, the Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said that «the Pope is serene, of good humor and has read a newspaper.»
Given the situation, Francisco has annulled his participation in audiences until next Monday, such as his presence in the jubilee of the artists or his visit to the Roman film studies of Cinecittà, so it is expected to continue hospitalized at least until that day.
Although it is not ruled out that he pronounces the traditional prayer of the Angelus, tomorrow Sunday, from the Gemelli and even that he does it from the balcony of his apartment on the tenth floor of the hospital.
Since the beginning of February the Pope explained that he suffered a «strong cold», as he said at the general audience of Wednesday, February 5 and in the following days he maintained his audiences, but in his residence, the Santa Marta house, so as not to move To the Pontifical Palace «due to bronchitis,» said the Holy See.
This is the fourth time that the Pope has to be hospitalized in the Gemelli.
In the past, the Argentine pontiff has suffered flu and respiratory problems that even forced him to be admitted three days in March 2023 and in November 2023 these respiratory problems forced him to cancel his trip to Dubai for COP28. EFE
