IACHR grants precautionary measures in favor of Cuban opponent

The Inter -American Commission on Human Rights He warned this week that the Cuban political prisoner Mario Alberto Hernández Leyva is in a situation of gravity and urgency of risk of irreparable damage to his rights in Cuba.

The entity indicated that the vice president of the opposition movement for a new Republic (Monr) and promoter of the Cuba Cuba campaign decides, since 2023, «it has been subject to repeated arrests, during which episodes of incommunication, beating, inclusion in cells of punishment and restriction of rights, such as visits and contact with the outside, have been reported.

He also warned that the opponent is deprived of adequate medical care, which aggravates the effects on their mental health.

The IACHR understood that the risk factors would be attributable to state agents responsible for the custody of the beneficiary.

In a resolution the agency asks the Havana regime to:

1. adopt the necessary measures to protect the rights to life, personal integrity and health of the beneficiary;
2. implement the necessary measures so that their detention conditions are adapted to applicable international standards. In particular, ensuring that the corresponding medical diagnoses and the definition of their medical treatment are made;
3. Attach the measures to be adopted with the beneficiary and its representatives; and,
4. Report on the actions advanced in order to investigate the alleged facts that gave rise to this resolution and thus avoid their repetition.
