Memory Law: Know the deadline for obtaining Spanish citizenship

The Government of Spain established for October 22, 2025 the final date to process citizens by the well -known Memory Law, a road that allowed thousands of descendants of Spaniards to access the European passport.

The Law of Democratic Memory, also known as the Law of grandchildren, entered into force in 2022 and benefits people born outside Spain of father, mother, grandmother or grandfather who were originally or are Spanish. Also to the sons and daughters of Spanish women who lost nationality for marrying a man of another nationality.

In addition, it aims to search for the approximately 114,000 missing people during the civil war and the dictatorship.

Initially, the law contemplated a period of two years from its entry into force, that is, until October 2024. However, due to the great demand for applications, the authorities decided to extend the term for another year, giving time until October 2025. From that date, it will no longer be possible to manage nationality by this way.
