One in ten people in the United States is identified as LGTBI, a historical record

9.3 % of people in the United States identified in 2024 as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, intersex (LGTBI) or other non -heterosexual identity, according to a Gallup survey published this Thursday, which coincides with the arrival From Donald Trump to the White House, which denies transsexuality.

This percentage is an increase of more than one percentage point with respect to the data of 2023 and is greater than 5.6 % of only four years before, in addition to being a maximum since Gallup began collecting the data in 2012.

The increase has to do in part with that almost a quarter (23.1 %) of the people of the so -called Z generation (born between 1997 and 2006) are identified as LGTBI, below 14.2 % of the millennials, of the 5.1 % of generation X or 3 % of the ‘boomers’.

In general, 85.7 % of Americans identify as heterosexual; 5.2 %, as bisexual; 2 %, gay; 1.4 %, lesbian, and 1.3 % transgender. Identities such as Pansexual, Asexual or ‘queer’ are minority.

The survey is based on a survey to 14,000 adults throughout the United States. 5 % of respondents declined to answer the question about their sexual identity.

The complex panorama for LGBTI in the United States

Upon arrival to power, Trump has demanded that only two genres in national policies are considered and has signed decrees to «defend women from extremist gender ideology and to restore biological truth in the federal government.»

This has made the federal government try to limit funds for gender reaffirmation therapies, something that has been criticized by groups such as the American Medical Association or the American Pediatric Academy.
