Pope Francis rests on his tenth day in the hospital after signs of renal failure

Pope Francis rested on Monday morning after a quiet night, on the tenth day of his hospitalization for a complex lung infection that has caused the early stages of renal failure, the Vatican said.

The statement of a line did not indicate whether Francisco, 88, had aroused. «The night passed well, Pope slept and is resting,» said the Holy See.

At the last minute of Sunday, doctors reported that blood tests showed early renal failure that, they said, was under control. They affirmed that Francisco was still in critical condition, but that he had not experienced more respiratory crises since Saturday.

Francisco received high supplementary oxygen flows and, on Sunday he was alert, replied and attended Mass. His prognosis was reserved.

Doctors have warned that Francisco’s main threat is sepsis, a serious blood infection that can occur as a complication of pneumonia. To date there has been no reference to any start of sepsis in the medical parts provided by the Vatican, including Sunday.

Monday is Francisco’s tenth in the hospital, which matches his papacy’s longest hospitalization. In 2021 he spent ten days at the Gemelli hospital in Rome after 33 centimeters (13 inches) colon removed.

In New York, on Sunday, Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledged what Church leaders in Rome were not saying publicly: that the Catholic faithful were united «together with the bed of a dying father.»

«As our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has very fragile in health, and probably close to death,» said Dolan in his homily from the pulpit of the Cathedral of St. Patrick, although he later told the journalists that he expected and prayed to Francisco «recover.»

Doctors have said that Francisco’s condition is unstable, given his age, fragility and pre -existing pulmonary disease. His condition has revived speculation about what could happen if he becomes unconscious or incapacitated in some other way, and if he could give up.
