Reuters: Trinidad-Venezuela gas project does not stop despite the US pressure, according to Trinitense Prime Minister

Companies that plan an emblematic coastal project outside between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago «have not decreased» their works, Trinitense Prime Minister Stuart Young said Thursday, despite the growing United States’s growing pressure on Venezuela, a sanctioned country, and uncertainty about the extension of the license for the project.

After conversations with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who visits countries in South America and the Caribbean this week, Young said that «the panorama is changing», in reference to the imposition of tariffs secondary to importers of Venezuelan oil and gas recently announced by Washington.

In 2023, Shell.L) was granted and the National Gas Company of Trinidad an American license authorized by the gas project, located in Venezuelan waters and whose first production could begin next year. This license expires in October.

The United States has not shown its commitment to extend it, although companies consider it essential to ensure the first production once the final investment decision is made in the project, which could occur this year.

The Trinidad government plans to buy teams from US suppliers to reinforce energy security, added Young, without providing details.
