As of March 2025, Spain will implement an exhaustive review of the nationalities granted by non -native roads, such as residence, option or nature letter. This measure seeks to detect and correct possible fraud or irregularities in nationalization processes, which has generated concern among new Spanish citizens.
Who could lose nationality?
The review will focus on cases where they are identified:
- Continued use of the previous nationality: If for three years the original citizenship is maintained without showing the intention of conserving the Spanish.
- Activities against the interests of Spain: How to enter military service or accept political positions in other countries without authorization.
- Fraud in the naturalization process: Including falsification of documents or concealment of information.
It is important to note that the loss of nationality will not be automatic. An administrative file will be held where those affected may present allegations.
Nationality recovery
It is possible to recover Spanish nationality meeting the following requirements:
- Legal residence in Spain (with exceptions for emigrants and their descendants).
- Formal declaration of will to recover before the Civil Registry.
- Registration in the civil registry corresponding to the applicant’s address.
Context and recommendations
Spain has reinforced its nationality policies, in response to the increase in migratory requests and controls. According to the INE, in 2023, the main countries of origin of the new citizens were Morocco, Venezuela and Colombia.
New Spanish citizens are recommended to remain informed about these regulations and meet the legal requirements to avoid problems.
