The Commissioner of Commerce of the European Union (EU), the Slovak Maros Sefcovic, insisted on Tuesday in the United States that his goal is to achieve a «fair» agreement with Washington instead of «unjustified tariffs.»
This Tuesday, Sefcovic met with the United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, the trade representative, Jamieson Greer, and the director of the National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett.
«24 intense hours in Washington for substantial conversations with Lutnick, Greer and Hassett,» said SEFCOVIC in a message in his X account.
«Hard work continues. The priority of the European Union is a fair and balanced agreement instead of unjustified tariffs. We share the objective of strengthening the industry on both sides, ”he added.
It is Sefcovic’s second visit to Washington since Lutnick assumed his position to try to avoid a commercial war between both powers.
The Washington Plan, drawn by the president, Donald Trump, is to impose reciprocal tariffs on imports from April 2, as well as in certain strategic items, although the White House has given signs that it is willing to incorporate some exemptions.
The European Commission said last week that it will wait in mid -April to apply the first countermeasures in response to American tariffs to European aluminum and steel, already in force, to give more margin to the negotiation with Washington and achieve a solution.
