The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, met on Tuesday in Washington with Argentine Chancellor Gerardo Werthein in a meeting in which they talked about the need to continue fighting authoritarianism, particularly in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
These regimes, said the State Department In a statement on the meeting, «they threaten the national security of the United States» and destabilize the hemisphere.
Rubio and Werthein «emphasized their support for the brave peoples» of these three countries «in their struggle for their fundamental freedoms» and against oppression at the hands of authoritarian regimes. They also pointed out the «harmful influence» of these «malignant external actors,» said the spokeswoman for the US Foreign Ministry, Tammy Bruce.
He added that Secretary Rubio celebrated Argentina’s continuous collaboration around shared economic priorities and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation in key sectors.
«The Rubio Secretary and Foreign Minister Werthein promised to strengthen and further deepen diplomatic ties between the United States and Argentina, based on our shared values and mutual interests,» said the spokeswoman.
Foreign Minister Werthein also planned to meet with the United States commercial representative, Jamieson Greer, to strengthen bilateral trade and begin to delineate the foundations for a solid commercial agreement between the two countries, according to the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
Wertheim assumed the position of Chancellor in October 2024 after President Javier Milei dismissed Foreign Minister Diana Mondino, after she voted in the United Nations against the United States embargo against Cuba.
At that time, in a statement from the presidency, the Administration of Milei said that «categorically opposes the Cuban dictatorship and will remain firm in the promotion of a foreign policy that condemns all regimes that perpetrate the violation of human rights.»
