«Eduardo Franco, president of Mavid-Carabobo, clarified the confusion around HIV figures in the region, emphasizing that the 5,500 cases mentioned correspond to a cumulative record of patients, and not to new diagnoses.
«It is important to specify that these are 5,500 people already registered, not 5,000 new cases of HIV. Of this total, more than 4,500 are receiving treatment, and 98% of them have reached an undetectable state, which means that they do not transmit the virus, ”Franco explained in statements to the Circuit Successes of Unión Radio. For his part, the infectologist Mario Commagna, coordinator of the HIV consultation of the Vargas Hospital and director of the Elece Trece project, said that, according to data last year, approximately 500 new contagions were recorded in the country.
Comegna added: «This figure remains within the expected parameters for the current HIV situation in Venezuela. It remains a concentrated epidemic that mainly affects key populations, and the prevalence does not exceed 1% of the general population ».
