The Trump government will reopen an immigrant families detention center in Texas, according to the company that manages the installation.

The Family Residential Center of Southern Texas in Dilley, Texas, will be reopened under a new agreement with the city and the US immigration and customs control service (ICE (ICE), according to a press release from Wednesday of the Private Company of Prisons Corecivic.

The city of Dilley confirmed in a statement that the installation will be reopened soon. ICE has not yet responded to a request for comments.

The space of 2,400 beds was built in 2014 for the arrest of families, but began to house only adults at the end of 2021, according to Ryan Gustin, director of Public Affairs of Corecivic. The installation closed in August 2024 when the previous contract was completed, according to the company.

Dilley’s detention center, one of the largest in the US, has faced criticism in the past for its treatment of immigrant families. Critics have expressed concerns about bad conditions, including inadequate medical care, in family detention centers. ICE has repeatedly defended the facilities.

The center is expected to house families under the new contract, they said Gustin and the administrator of the city of Dilley, Henry Arredondo, to CNN.

The new contract is expected to run until 2030, generate US $ 180 million annually, according to Corecivic.

This happens just a week after the GEO group announced a contract of 15 years and US $ 1 billion with ICE to convert Delney Hall into Newark, New Jersey, in an immigration processing center of 1,000 beds, despite the opposition of some local officials.
