The Donald Trump government will revoke the temporary legal status in the United States for thousands of Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans from April 24.
The measure released this Friday ends the humanitarian ‘parole’ granted to these immigrants during the presidency of Joe Biden, which allowed them to enter the country legally and remain for a maximum of two years.
The previous president launched this program to offer a legal route of admission to Venezuelans in 2022 and extended it a year later to Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans; at a time when his government dealt with high levels of illegal immigration of these nationalities.
According to official figures, The program has benefited some 532,000 people in total. At present, however, it is unknown how many remain in force or how many of these people have been able to change their immigration status to another that allows them to legally remain in the country.
Those who do not have another different status, could face the possibility of being deported from April 24.
Trump had already advanced his intention to end humanitarian ‘parole’ programs
The National Security Department had already announced in January that it aimed to gradually eliminate the humanitarian ‘parole’ programs that until now allowed immigrants who met certain conditions to be able to live and work temporarily in the US.
That announced did not specify the programs that would be canceled, but said they would be analyzed «case by case.»
In one of the executive orders signed by Trump on his first day of mandate, however, the following was already specified: «Finish with all ‘Parole’ programs that are contrary to the US policies established in my executive orders, including the program known as« Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan processes ».
«The Biden-Harris government abused the humanitarian ‘parole’ program to indiscriminately allowing 1.5 million immigrants to enter our country. All this stopped the first day of the Trump administration », The Department of National Security argued.
