Two women over 60 were killed in Cuba, which elevates the number of compiled femicides to five so far this year by independent platforms that monitor sexist crimes on the island since 2019.
The Gender Observatory Alas Tenses (OGAT) and the platform I do believe you in Cuba (YSTCC) described as «very terrible» the events «being both of older adults and one of them familiar, a modality that occurs shortly» .
On January 7 in the City of Artemisa, Julia Safón Álvarez, 61, was killed in her home by her partner, who subsequently committed suicide, something quite frequent in the murders for macho violence.
Little more than a month, on February 11 in the San Miguel del Padrón Havana municipality, Bertha, a senior citizen, of which the last names are unknown, was killed in her home by her grandson, with whom she shared housing in The eagerness.
“Berta’s case is included within family femicide, which is one of the categories we have within our methodology. Not only do we documented the femicides of a couple or ex -partner, but also when a woman’s murder is committed by men in her family environment, ”said Yanelis Núñez, Ogat specialist.
“In this category, family femicide is included in a general sense, but also femicide for the crime of honor, for example, that is the murder of a woman by a man in her family when she believes that women have caused discredit to the same ”.
Organizations cover, within the categorization they use, sexual feminicide, social feminicide and vicar feminicide, as well as gynecobstetric feminicide because they consider that it is agreed with gender violence in Cuba.
According to organizations, both femicides were registered from information released by press, citizenship and activists, and then verified through community sources.
“I want to emphasize that we have our communication routes, our social networks and our email available to send us information about these cases or others that have happened in the past and invite them to share our contents, support us by making a small donation. The ways of doing so can be found on our website and on our social networks, ”said Núñez.
2024 closed with 55 femicides registered on the island and until February 20, 2025, independent observatories have confirmed five while investigating alerts in Artemis, Matanzas, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba.
Independent observatories have reiterated the need for the Cuban government to declare a «state of emergency for gender violence», while they have urged it for the implementation of an integral law that effectively combats the terrible scourge that is made more strong in the country in relation to economic precariousness.
“More than anything, we demand that the regime, finally now that the FMC (Federation of Cuban Women) gender violence and how it is expressed. ”
