The future of the automotive industry points to a transition from gasoline vehicles to electric or hybrids, in order to reduce the use of fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and take care of the environment.

In Venezuela there is already a presence of this type of cars and in the UCAB, according to internal calculations, at least 10 units circulate.

Betting on innovation and eco -amigable technology, and in line with the promotion of sustainable development objectives (SDGs), the university installed a cargo station for electric vehicles at Montalbán.

The unit, inaugurated on Friday, March 21, 2025, has a capacity of 7.4 kilowatts (kW) of alternating current (CA) and is capable of loading a car in approximately three hours, which is considered a medium time.

The project is the first in its kind in higher education institutions in the country and was possible thanks to the support of the Swing Energy Alternative Energy Organization, with which the UCAB signed an agreement that contemplated the installation of the module and the donation of an electric truck for institutional use.

The house of studies also established an alliance with Verdi, transport company based on electric vehicles. Thanks to the agreement, a transfers will be activated soon, for the Ucabista community, which will connect to the University with Chacaíto.

Electric mobility in UCAB: Another sustainable commitment

Gustavo García, Administrative Vice Chancellor of the UCAB, stressed that the incorporation of the load unit for electric vehicles has several purposes: meet a demand with a growing perspective, promote eco -amigable mobility, reduce the carbon footprint on the campus and educate in sustainable development.

«We have some policies for the environment. We are very interested in the subject of sustainability of the campus, therefore, with this agreement we manage to promote the possibility that more people are interested in replacing gasoline vehicles – which generate emissions and are not good for the environment – by this formula, ”said Garcia.

The Vice Chancellor added that the station will serve as an academic support tool. With it you can develop different classes, in undergraduate, postgraduate and extension, which revolve around the advantages of alternative energies, the functioning of electricity for cars and other ecological awareness issues.

For the director of Environmental Sustainability, Joaquín Benítez, the initiative adds benefits for the improvement of the green management of the institution. He commented that 66% of the current carbon footprint is due to mobility to access campus. «We calculated that last year an average of 4,400 gasoline cars entered daily to the Montalbán Headquarters. If a portion became electric would represent a considerable decrease in our carbon footprint. It is a long -term objective, but you have to stimulate it, «he said.

The professor also recalled the sustainable nature of the load module, since electricity in Venezuela comes mostly from hydroelectric sources. «You can achieve more than 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the life of the car in relation to a gasoline vehicle, if the energy you use to load the vehicle is renewable, clean. It is a relevant impact, ”he said.

How does the UCAB electric charge station work?
The electric car load module is installed in the parking area located between the postgraduate and rectory buildings.

To use the station, the vehicle owner must download the Swing Energy mobile application (available for iOS and Android). After registering and specifying the car model you have, you must choose between two load modalities: for a time or per kilowatt.

From the app itself, the corresponding payment may make, although during the first month of operation the service will be free for the Ucabistas.

Universida-Empresa Verde Alianza
Carlos García Noguera, CEO of Swing Energy and Verdi, acknowledged that ecoamigable mobility is still in the initial stage in Venezuela, but believes that this alternative will end up making its way. He expressed his satisfaction because the UCAB has joined this project.

«The world goes to the sustainable. The fact that 95% of the carbon footprint of a vehicle is eliminated, if an electric one with a conventional one is compared, is something important. We, as a oil country, cannot be left behind with this type of technology, ”he said.

ECOSOSTENIBILITY: PERMANENT POLICY OF THE UCAB
There are several projects that the Andrés Bello Catholic University has launched in its two venues, as part of its environmental sustainability policy.

These efforts consolidated the Montalbán Campus in 2024 as the most sustainable in Venezuela, and Guayana as the third, according to the UI Greenmetric World University Ranking. This list is prepared by Indonesia Universitas and positions higher education institutions around the world for their eco -love -managing.

Among other initiatives, the UCAB has the green ceiling, the open plastic recycling classroom, a wastewater treatment plant (Guayana), a transverse chair of undergraduate on environment, a postgraduate program in Environmental Engineering, in addition to sustainable research and extension projects.

As for sustainable mobility, the institution recently incorporated eight electric skates for the use of security personnel. The electric truck donated by Swing Energy has capacity for nine people and will be used for institutional purposes.
