The United States government has sent more than 100 migrantsall of Venezuelan nationality, to the naval base of Guantanamoin Cuba, American media reported.
The administration of Donald Trump has underlined the sending of these migrants to the island – which began on February 4 – as an example of the hard hand policy of the US president against irregular migration, and the Secretary of National Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, has described them as «the worst of the worst.»
The administration has not delivered details about the detainees, beyond calling them from «criminals» and linking them with the transnational band of Venezuelan origin of Aragua.
Half of these people, 53 men, are arrested in a prison within the military base, according to The New York Times, which published a list with the names of migrants.
EFE contacted the families of four of the migrants who are in the list published by the newspaper, who defend the innocence of their loved ones and denounce that they have not been able to communicate with them for several days.
Efe could not find a criminal record for three of them, in addition to irregular entry charges. The fourth was accused of beating a guard during a revolt inside the Detention Center in Texas where he was held.
Three of them were arrested after presenting an appointment before the immigration authorities on the southern border, which they achieved in the CBP One application. The third went to arrest after crossing to the US irregularly and surrendering to border patrol agents.
They all had tattoos and mentioned their relatives that migration agents were accusing them of being members of the Aragua train for the designs they had on the skin.
José Daniel Simancas, 30 years old and builder by profession, decided to emigrate to the US to give economic support to his children, according to Efe his sister, Jesika Palma.
«We are desperate to not know about my brother, the anguish of knowing that they are treating you as a terrorist, who do not know what they are doing,» said the young woman to Efe.
Simancas gave himself to the border patrol in May 2024, after having crossed the border irregularly, said his sister. From that, he has been arrested by the immigration authorities.
Palma gave Efe documents that prove that he has no criminal record in Venezuela or Ecuador, where he lived for five years after emigrating for the first time.
«His only crime,» said Palma, «was emigrating to Lands Lejos; It is unfair, the only crime he has was to leave. ” EFE
