Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican for New York, said in an interview with the Fox Business chain that «the world needs to see what is happening in Cuba.»
Malliotakis, whose mother is Cuban, said that Cuba faces a collapse, and mentioned the extreme difficulties that the people are suffering, such as the lack of food and medicines, saying that people are desperate.
The congressman said that there is an opportunity for them to provide satellite service through the Starlink company of Elon Musk, so that the Cuban people receive information and also to expose what happens on the island.
«We need to show our friends, our allies, who work with Cuba, that they are supporting this horrible communist regime and that all democracies must unite to finally free the Cuban people, to rise. We expose what is happening on this island and hopefully achieve a change that benefits everyone,» he said.
Malliotakis also said that «any regime change has to come from the people» and that the United States could help in a reconstruction of the country, adding that the island will have an economic rebirth, once it is a free nation.
«Remember, those of the regime live as kings and queens while people are starving. It is a very desperate situation. Perhaps the international community wants to unite to help a free tank. There will be many opportunities, by the way, so that the private sector invests there. It does not need money from the government or taxpayers. The private sector will enter and will have an economic rebirth once they are a free nation; that is what we expect.
Recently, his colleague, the Republican congressman for Florida, Carlos A. Giménez, asked the Trump administration to stop remittances and trips to Cuba and also apply «maximum pressure» tariffs to countries that traffic with the slave labor of Cuban doctors.
In an interview in Fox Business this week the Cuban American declared that the regime in Cuba is illegitimate, enemy of the United States and that he oppresses his own people and therefore has made these requests to the Trump administration.
In his opinion, the Cuban regime «is on the edge of the abyss» and the US president, Donald Trump, must «push them to vacuum.»
The congressman said that the United States needs Cuba to «go from being an enemy and a base of operations for Russia and China to be a friend, and a democracy.»
In March, Giménez gave the Department of National Security, a list with the names of dozens of Cuban repressors who would be in the United States, prepared from an investigation by the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba.
Meanwhile, the Senator for Florida, Republican Rick Scott, announced in a message for the social network X that the law of fighting corrupt political influence will present again before Congress.
This initiative would limit the entry to the US to members of the Cuban regime, as well as bilateral meetings between Cuban and American officials, in which, in his opinion, national security would be risk.
Scott’s proposal contemplates that the Secretary of State requires that the foreign missions of a series of countries notify the State Department at least 72 hours in advance of any meeting between officials or representatives of the country covered and state or local officials in the United States and any official visit to educational institutions or research institutions in the United States.
The list includes Cuba, China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua or the Afghan regime of Taliban.
