US transfers to migrants retained in the Naval Base of Guantanamo

The United States authorities retired immigrants who were in the detention centers of the Naval Bay of the Guantanamo Bay.

Two defense officials informed the Voice of America That 40 detainees, including 23 «highly dangerous illegal foreigners» were transferred to Louisiana on Tuesday.

Donald Trump’s government reported at the end of January its plans to use the naval base to detain migrants who would be deported. The first 10 undocumented people arrived at the detention center at the beginning of February.

After signing the executive order, Trump said that «I would immediately duplicate» the ability to retain the undocumented, and described the base as «a hard place, a place from which it is difficult to leave.»

«We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to stop the worst illegal immigrants,» said the president.

In the Guantanamo military base, a detention center for immigrants has been independent of the prison for terrorism suspects.

The base was used in the past to house migrants from Cuba and Haiti intercepted in the sea. During the crisis of the Balseros in 1994, one of the greatest migratory exodus of the last decades on the island, Cubans were retained for years at the camp.

The Naval Base is a territory under US jurisdiction since 1903 that Washington obtained through a perpetual lease after the war with Spain. The lease can only end by mutual agreement.
