USA supports José Daniel Ferrer’s humanitarian initiative and condemns harassment against him

The United States condemned on Wednesday the harassment of the Cuban authorities to the opponent José Daniel Ferrer and the humanitarian aid project that leads with other activists of the Patriotic Union of Cuba.

«Outraged by Harassment of the Cuban Police to Citizens who receive food and essential items of @jdaniefferrer. We support José Daniel while providing vital help to the people of Santiago de Cuba,» the Western Hemisphere’s Office of the Western Hemisphere of the State Department said in a post on a social networks.

The message, shared by the US embassy in Havana, urges the Cuban regime to «focus on taking care of its people and not repressing it,» and warns that those responsible for these repressive actions «will be accounts.»

Ferrer has denounced in videos published in his social networks the growing harassment of state security against the community project leading at the headquarters of the UNPACU, in the distribution of Altamira de Santiago de Cuba, where he also resides with his family.

Thanks to the work carried out by the opponent with several activists and collaborators, hundreds of people in extreme poverty in that province of the east of the country have received food, health care and medicines in recent weeks.

But The police siege narrowsand Ferrer fears that the authorities plan to imprison him again. «If I am not: thanks to all the friends and siblings of always supportive fighting, thanks to my brave family and my sacrificed wife. Keep fighting. There is no right to rest while Cuba suffers,» he told his followers on Tuesday through his social networks.

From early on Wednesday, police patrols watched the streets surrounding the UNPACU headquarters. Surveillance lasts more than 27 continuous hours, denounced the leader of the organization. State security, he said, seeks to prevent activists and collaborators from reaching the place to prepare foods that offer dozens of very needy people daily.

In a later message, Ferrer denounced several arrests, both activists and people attending the place for help.
