Without remittances, the Cuban regime cannot pay for repression

The only American congressman born in Cuba, the Republican for Florida Carlos Giménez, defended in a recent interview with Fox News his request to the Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, to suspend the trips and remittances to the island, with the exception of some humanitarian cases.

Giménez referred to the ways in which the United States could increase the pressure on the regime of Havana, and stressed the need to “drown it economically” to achieve real change in the country, emphasizing that one of the most effective ways to do so is through economic sanctions that prevent the flow of resources towards the coffers of the Cuban government.

The congressman said that the dictatorship in Cuba lives its last moments, and that a good way to precipitate that fall is to put into action what it is asking: «stop all flights from and from Cuba» and remittances, which constitute a great cash influence for the island’s regime.

According to Giménez, millions of dollars flow from the south of Florida to help family and friends in Cuba, but «that is also a lifeguard for the regime, this is how they pay for repressive apparatus,» he said.

Without remittances, Giménez added, the regime cannot afford the repression and the people may finally get up against them.

«The message has to be: the regime has to leave,» said the Cuban American legislator.

Giménez referred to the negative influence of authoritarian regimes such as that of Cuba in the region and said that if a change of government occurred in those countries, several of the problems that have caused to the United States, such as indiscriminate immigration, would begin to dissipate.
