«The decision has not been easy. There will be another opportunity to analyze it. What corresponds at this time is to thank from the heart the responsibility that the president handed me to hold this position, which is such a high responsibility, ”Tohá said at a press point from the La Moneda Palace (headquarters of the Government).
Unlike the traditional right and the extreme right, the ruling party still has no candidate for the presidential elections that will be held in November in Chile, but center -left sectors have insisted in the last weeks that the best option is Tohá, who arrived at the Ministry of Interior in September 2022.
Other sectors consider that the best candidate for the elections would be the former president Michelle Bachelet, who was the first woman to reach the Chilean presidency and ruled in two non-consecutive mandates, 2006-2010 and 2014-2018.
Bachelet has repeatedly reiterated that he is not in his plans to opt for a third term, although in his formation, the Socialist Party, they hope he will reconsider his decision.
«Everything we have managed to advance in this period in the Ministry of Interior has been for the support of many people and I will not forget at any time, much to do. There are tasks that are halfway, there are unfinished tasks and there are objectives that are in development, ”added Tohá.
Boric name is expected to replace Tohá this afternoon in a ceremony in La Moneda.
«I have the confidence that the president will find these people the most appropriate for both the Ministry of Interior and the new Ministry of Security, which in little weeks will be working,» added the former minister, daughter of the Prime Minister of Interior of Salvador Allende, José Tohá, arrested and tortured by military after the coup d’etat and deceased in 1974.
59 years old, Tohá arrived at the head of the Interior in substitution of Izkia Siches in September 2022 when Boric made his first great cabinet change after the plebiscite in which the first proposal of a new constitution, of a leftist tendency was rejected and that the president himself had publicly supported.
The former minister accumulated experience in various institutions during the governments of the Concertación, a coalition of center -left parties that managed the transition after the departure of the dictator Augusto Pinochet.
In 2009, at the end of the first mandate of former president Bachelet, she was appointed spokesman, becoming the first woman to occupy said position.
In 2012, he broke another glass roof and became the first woman to be chosen by popular vote as mayor of Santiago.
