More than 400 thousand Cubans are irregularly found in the United States

More than 400 thousand Cubans are irregular today in the United States, according to data granted by a national survey.

The study is part of the American community (ACS) survey and, in 2021, more than 1.3 million Cubans had been counted in North American territory.

Although most of the natives of the island manage to regularize their immigration status thanks to legal figures such as the Cuban adjustment law Family reunification, in recent years the number of irregular migrants from the largest of the Antilles has risen.

How many Cubans are illegally in the United States

Recent figures indicate that at least 442 thousand Cubans are in an irregular immigration situation today in the United States. That is, they do not have a status or documentation that justifies their presence in American territory.

According to the United States Census Office, Cubans represent 3% of the total of the 45.3 million immigrants in the country. Although most Cuban migrants have managed to regularize their status through the Cuban adjustment law, promulgated in 1966, which facilitates the naturalization of Cubans, the figure of those who have not achieved this status is far from insignificant.

What are the states with the greatest population of Cubans

In terms of geographical distribution, most Cubans in the United States are in Florida, specifically in Miami-Dade County, which houses 52% of the country’s Cuban population.

Other states with a significant Cuban presence are Texas and New Jersey, although to a lesser extent. This Cuban exodus has generated a palpable impact on local communities, where culture and socio -economic dynamics have been influenced by the growing number of immigrants.

Despite being a group that has historically had a high degree of economic and social integration, the figures show that Cubans face challenges in terms of education and employment.

Educational level and labor insertion of Cubans

According to Migration Policy Institute, 23% of Cubans in the United States and over 25 years of age do not have a high school diploma, a figure that exceeds the average of other immigrants.

Regarding university education, only 24% of Cubans in the United States have a higher title, a lower rate than the immigrant population in general, which reaches 34%.

The labor insertion of Cubans also shows differences with respect to the rest of immigrants. In 2021, only 60%of Cubans of working age actively participated in the labor market, a figure that is lower than that of immigrants in general (66%) and the natives (62%).

In spite of this, Cubans occupy a variety of positions in sectors such as administration, business, science, and services, although the income of Cuban households remain lower than the national average, with an average income of 52 thousand dollars annually, below 70 thousand dollars of the homes of natives and other immigrants.

A growing community

Although Cubans continue to be a resilient community and with a high degree of integration, undocumented figures reflect the difficulties inherent in regularization processes in a context where migration policies constantly change.

The new measures taken by the administration of President Donald Trump could drastically influence the increase of Cubans without legal status. To fulfill its proposal to disable humanitarian parole, more than 100,000 Antillanos would lose the status that this legal figure granted and would be at the mercy of the immigration authorities.
